If you suspect that your tattoo maybe infected there is really one thing you should do, go to the doctor. They will be able to treat and diagnose it. More often than not simply be given antibiotics and may take a blood test to be on the safe side. The telltale signs of a tattoo infection include increased pain, swelling, redness, warmth or pain around the tattoo, red streaks extending from the area, pus from the wound, swollen or tender lymph nodes, and, or fever. Note that the first time that a tattoo of the skin is red and tender, and your tattoo may very well ooze pus this is normal. However, if this occurs within days after your tattoo, then it is fairly safe bet that is infected and should be treated immediately. If you are not sure if your tattoo becomes infected and do not want to spend the money to a doctor, go back to your tattoo artist and see if they can confirm the infection and then go to the doctor.
